Practical Immediate Solutions

There are two pillars to our work: using practical, immediate solutions and long-term partnerships for change to reach Bomet's 1 million residents. Right now Dig Deep is working with communities to bring clean water, safe toilets, and good hygiene to those who need it most by:

  • Building rainwater harvesting systems, digging wells and harnessing springs to help Bomet's residents access clean water

  • Building safe, hygienic, and private spaces in which to go to the toilet, as well as reducing the costs of households building their own toilet through improving local sanitation markets

  • Supporting teachers and community health volunteers to deliver hygiene education, ensuring communities understand how disease is spread, and breaking down the taboos surrounding menstrual health.

As a result of our practical immediate solutions we have...

  • Worked with villages and schools to build 72 rainwater harvesting systems, boreholes, and spring protection projects which are currently supplying 35,000+ people with clean water

  • Worked with 61 schools to build safe, hygienic latrines providing 21,000+ children with a safe space to go to the toilet

  • Delivered hygiene and menstrual health education to 26,000+ children and their 96,000+ family members

  • Worked with 166 villages to help 80,000+ people end open defecation in their communities

"We are very grateful for what Dig Deep has done for our community. Dig Deep is constructing a water spring in my village called Koipeiyot that will help us get an uninterrupted supply. Sanitation in our community has greatly improved and we rarely go to the hospitals for diseases such as typhoid, cholera, and many others because we are now drinking clean water"

Our 5-year plan

To rapidly deliver the Bomet County Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Roadmap, Dig Deep and the County Government of Bomet have signed our Memorandum of Understanding (2022-27) which commits both ourselves and the government to co-funding and jointly delivering this work.

Through our practical, immediate solutions this means that over the next 5 years we plan to deliver:

  1. Construction of 81 water projects providing 80,000 people with clean water

  2. Construction and training projects at 29 schools providing 11,000 children with clean water, safe toilets, and good hygiene

  3. Construction of 2,000 household toilets to create Open Defecation Free communities for 188,000 people.

The cost of those projects is approximately £1.5 million. We are pleased to say that, due to the success of our projects over the last decade, the County Government of Bomet has committed to invest 50p for every £1 raised and invested by Dig Deep. This means that, in order to make these projects a reality, we need to raise at least £1 million for these projects.

At the same time through our long-term partnerships for change we plan to partner with the County Government of Bomet to deliver the Institutional Strengthening interventions identified in the roadmap. These strategic interventions are critical to ensuring our blueprint water, sanitation, and hygiene services are scaled sustainably across the entire county.
